In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in San Francisco; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. Typical hours are 8:30 am–8 pm. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. You can reach G & Y Bakery & Cafe at (415) 291-8688; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. More information is available on its website, app.heyeats.shop.

I called in and got the order when I got there. We ordered 6 items: 1) Salt and pepper chicken wings 6 units (and had 2 orders), 2) Broccoli and beef, 3) Beef chow fun, 4) Fried rice, 5) Peking pork and 6) Chicken chow mein. They were okay, and could be better, especially broccoli (too much water).

The food is so good! The service was amazing! We shared one clay pot meal since we weren’t super hungry and it was super filling. Portion size was good size for one person, plenty of you are wanting to share for a lite bite.

Their salt and pepper chicken wings are a must order! Great place to stop for a traditional Cantonese breakfast too.

I was a visitor from Canada and I had a dinner with my mom on the first day in San Francisco, we ordered 2 plates that are US$11.5 each. When I wanted to pay, the server asked me "pay with cash or card", I said "cash", then she brought the bill with the price US$27.02 after tax and told me "it doesn't include tips", I paid US$30 in total before I left. Honestly, I didn't know how much the sales tax rate would be in San Francisco but I didn't realize the bill was incorrect until I went back to the hotel, which should be 2*11.5*1.0863=25. I'm not sure why she did so, maybe she thought we are from mainland China and don't know the tipping culture as we speak Mandarine? Definitely I know the tipping culture in North America, and I always tip the server when I dine in but I think this behaviour couldn't be acceptable as the server lied to the customers. Probably the owner and the server wouldn't care about this review, please double check the pricing before you pay no matter with cash or card as a customer.

Good service. I'm on a hunt for a good value Mongolian beef over rice in Chinatown, and I think G & Y is one of my top right now in terms of taste, price and portions. I know this is not their speciality dish but it's quite tasty compared to others along this street.

Finally had a chance to try this place out after passing by when it was full capacity many times. It’s like a Hong Kong style cafe with many great choices to choose from. Service was great and was worth the wait. During the morning they only serve breakfast items and for the dishes that require the wok you will have to wait for later. Definitely will be back when I’m in the area!

Food is quite authentic and flavorful! I enjoyed all the dishes. The clay pot tasted really fresh, the tofu with fish is juicy and tender, the beef noodles and Hong Kong noodles are well seasoned and rich in flavor. I would love to come back and try other stuff here.

I have been wanting clay pot rice for a while and did a little research; this restaurant popped up. We had the following: Combo in Clay Pot Rice: The combination of Chinese sausage, chicken, and mushrooms was a harmonious blend of flavors. The crispy, slightly burnt rice from the clay pot added a delightful crunch. It’s a must-try for those who appreciate texture and depth in their meal. Beef Chow Fun: The wok hei (wok breath) was evident, infusing the wide rice noodles with a smoky flavor. The tender beef slices complemented the dish perfectly. A definite winner. Wonton Soup: The soup base leaned toward the sweeter side, which might not be everyone’s preference. However, the wontons were plump and flavorful. If you have a sweet tooth, this soup will hit the spot. Hong Kong Milk Tea: The iconic blend of coffee and tea! G&Y Bakery’s version did not disappoint. Creamy, aromatic, and a comforting choice for any time of day.
